Emergency Care & Out of Hours Veterinary Service

Part of our mission of providing our clients with professional and compassionate care is making sure we have you covered when the clinic is closed.

We are NOT an emergency centre however we have a vet and nursing team rostered until midnight 7 days per week.

This service is provided to existing clients of Ballarat Vet Practice. This service is not for general enquires or routine consultations. For general enquires, please contact the clinic during normal business hours.

The after-hour service we offer to clients rotates is through the Ballarat Veterinary Clinic, Eureka Veterinary Clinic and Ballarat Pet and Farm Veterinary Clinic on weekdays. On weekends, it rotates through the Eureka Veterinary Clinic and the Ballarat Veterinary Clinic. Please make sure you ask which clinic is operating that night so there are no confusions on where to go.

Upon arrival, your pet will be assessed by one of our veterinarians. We will aim to provide an estimate of the costs involved with your case, however, please be aware that with emergency procedures costs can vary depending on what services and treatments are required.

Our veterinarians and nurses will keep you updated regularly during the course of your pet’s stay in hospital. In some cases, we may need to refer to a veterinary specialist centre or 24-hour emergency facility as we do not have staff in the clinic 24 hours.

Please contact us to discuss our after-hours arrangements, it’s always nice to know this information before you actually need it.

Repeat Prescriptions

If your pet requires more medication, please call our friendly reception team and we will arrange for our veterinarians to make up your prescription. Repeat prescriptions are usually available for pets that have been seen by the Clinic in the last 6 months. By phoning ahead, it allows our veterinary team time to ensure the correct medications are dispensed as per your treating veterinarians’ instructions. Most prescriptions can be filled on the same day provided that the medication is in stock.

It is important to note that if your pet has a chronic disease that requires management with long term or prescription only medications it is important that they have regular check-ups.

This not only ensures that your pet’s disease is being well managed, it is also essential for ensuring that your pet is comfortable as possible whilst receiving the very best care available.

In the interest of your pet’s health and welfare, repeat prescriptions are usually only issued if your pet has been seen by the clinic in the last 6 months.

When it comes to prescription only medications, we are legally required to only provide prescription medication to animals directly under our care. If it has been more than 6 months since we have seen your pet, then we can no longer legally provide a repeat prescription for such medications.

Regular check-ups allow us to expertly monitor your pet’s response to the medication and ensure correct dosing. Regular checks may highlight the need for a change of dose rate or medication.

Check-ups also help us to ensure that your pet is receiving the most appropriate medication for their disease in light of their response to therapy, their clinical signs, disease progression, other co morbidities and current health status. All of these factors can change over time. With regular check-ups we can ensure that your pet is being safely and effectively medicated and that their disease is being treated in line with the latest research and findings.

As chronic diseases progress, your pet may need additional medication. It is also possible for new problems to develop so regular health checks and monitoring are an essential part of your pet’s ongoing health care.

With most prescriptions being tailored according to your pet’s body weight, regular check-ups allow us to keep an accurate record of your pet’s weight and adjust the dose rate of current medications accordingly. Many diseases result in changes in body weight either as a result of reduced activity or the effects of the disease on their musculoskeletal system or their digestive tract. Accurate dosing according to bodyweight is crucial to ensure that all medications are being given within a safe and effective therapeutic range.
